I have a silly question, has anyone successfully put a tdi head onto an AAZ
td?

I don't that that is possible, maybe an early TDI head, 1Z or something before they changed the block design and engine support mounting system. Bryan Belman, Pt. Yea, I was thinking 1z ahu head due to the block, I seen a tdi head that
looks the same other than a couple ports were changed and location. Figured
a 3 notch gasket to help reduce any needed compression

You can certainly bolt up a Mk3 TDI (1Z, AHU, AFN) head to an AAZ block.
The blocks are the same except the AAZ block is missing the hole for the
crank position sensor. The cranks are the same except for the trigger
wheel for the crank position sensor. Rods are the same except the AAZ rods
have counterweights on them. The pistons are very different. The TDI
pistons have the combustion chamber in them and the head is flat. Because
of that, if you bolt a TDI head onto an AAZ shortblock, you will not have
any combustion chamber volume and the compression ratio will be a
gazillion:1. If you install 1Z, AHU, AFN, or ALH pistons, along with the
TDI injectors, valve cover, etc... you can run it as an mTDI which does not
require the crank position sensor. Several people have done exactly that.
If going that route, it would be a good idea to swap on the TDI pump
bracket as it has an extra idler roller which gives a bit more wrap on the
injection pump sprocket.

...and the thickest available head gasket will do precious little to adjust
the compression. It will not work without swapping the pistons.
